Cooling my feet in Agua Calliente Creek

There is nothing better than cooling your feet, after a long hot trail!
  • As you may have guessed by now, I like the outdoors, running, and backcountry skiing. Last summer I hiked the 1700 mile California section of the Pacific Crest Trail . In true ultra-style, I averaged about 30 miles a day, and rested only one day. I was on the trail for 60 days.

  • In addition to web authoring, I fly and maintain airplanes. I hold a FAA Airline Transport Pilots license, with SA227-Metroliner and EMB120-Brasilia type ratings, and I have 11,000 hours of flight time. I also hold an FAA Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics license, and I am currently restoring a 1956 Cessna 182.

  • When I'm not sitting at my computer or in the air, I run ultra-distance races (longer than 26.2 miles). My last long race was the Hardrock 100 mile race in Colorado on in July. I finished the race in 45 hours and change. This was by far the hardest of the 7 100 milers I've done. My PR for 100 miles was at the 1996 Leadville 100 miler and almost 2 hours faster than the last time I ran Leadville. This was the 5th 100 miler I have run

You may think that running a 100 mile mountain trail race is foolish, but I prefer this viewpoint:

"The people that I have met are not foolish; they are aware of how tired and cold and hungry and frightened and hurting and discouraged and disoriented and how possibly injured they will become. They know they will face great physical, mental, emotional, and possibly spiritual challenges as they make their way to the finish. This is what they are racing against. This is their challenge. This is what I admire."
    ---Carolyn Erdman

I paced Teresa Krall in the Western States 100 mile Endurance in California in June to a 28 hour, 36 minute finish. Way to go Teresa! Here is a story about the race, from a pacer's point of view
